“We can adventure with the wild kids and remember the best parts or stay inside and go crazy in the ‘safety/seclusion’ of our own home.” ⁣😝 ⁣ Basically what I said to my unconvinced husband as we embarked on our (my 🤥😂) afternoon 2 hour drive to tour a town and neither of the kids fell asleep in the car. 😆⁣ ⁣ I won’t sugarcoat that traveling (anywhere) with kids in Europe outside of a playground is easy. Visiting giant echoing cathedrals is 😱🔇; holding hands across streets is 🤯🛵; eating dinner out is 🤫🍟📱; etc right?!⁣ ⁣ And yet I’ve determined what is a priority to ENJOY and not to FEAR while here and seeing the country with the family is top! So I’ll grin and bare the stressful moments, take pictures of and memorize the sweet ones, and look back with fondness on every trip we took during this wild adventure.

Afternoon adventure to Wismar! A cute city with colorful row houses, giant churches, whimsical canals, and a vibrant port. The kids highlight’s included any playground that we came across while we enjoyed our beer and hearty dinner at a gorgeous establishment built in the 1450s! Trying to find the northern Germany gems while we’re here so I can share them on the blog!

Is it a sign of aging or just the age of your kids

Is it a sign of aging or just the age of your kids when date nights really take it out of you?! 😂. When adventuring our together is nice, but both of you would totally pay a babysitter just so you could lay in bed without having to put the kids down. When wine-ing and dining completely puts your gut in an uproar at 1am (after passing out from said indulgences as soon as the babysitter walks out the door). And then the next day is spent in recovery sans alcohol and rich food laying on the floor “playing with the kids.” 😂🙈 Now you’re wondering if you really do love your current concept of date nights after all. 😅. Time to rethink date night because I really do love the man, but this life stage is wiping us out! Any tips or 🙋🏻‍♀️? 📸 of the restaurant we ate at!

It seems that fall has decided to settle here in Hamburg 😬! So long as winter stays at bay, I think I can handle the short summer we had without too much fuss. I’m thankful I got serious about working out more consistently this past 2 months as it really helps the transition back into my JEANS 👖 😂🙏🏼. Both the hubby and I have finally shed those first German months of heavy Wein, Bretzel und Schnitzel enjoyment 😅🍷🥨🐖. Should help save some shopping money... *Should...*

Tuscany doesn’t make it easy to choose a place to stay 😍. So many incredible properties and beautiful villas for amazing nightly rates right now. (This one was not in my list of affordable options 😅.) I think my house interior goals are 100% Tuscany, Italy. Stone, wood and stucco Oh my.. Please stay open through the month Italy 🙏🏼.

That was me on my couch in the sun 2 hours prior😴🥱🦁. 😅I love a midday nap 💆🏻‍♀️ anyone else?! Seriously, I’ve always been obsessed with the zoo. (Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle has a special place in my heart!) Getting to experience the zoo with the kids while here, hopefully weekly, is a treasured thing! Letting them sprint around, choose their own adventure, and find their favorite animals each time is so good for everyone. Reuben surprisingly is the one that asks me to stay longer at certain animals just to watch them do their thing. It’s also amazing to be able to do this now with no diapers or stroller and just a backpack with waters and snacks! Here’s to a good bedtime tonight 🙏🏼😄🐻🐒🐯🐴🐘🦧🐫

Today dad took the kids to the zoo and I had some time to just sit and contemplate MYSELF. 🤯😅💆🏻‍♀️.⁣ ⁣ I answered some journaling prompts that asked: what type of people are you most drawn to? Which friends do you admire most and why? What environments/people/thoughts/moments give you the most/least energy? ⁣ ⁣ Just writing down answers to those things today gave me needed clarification for what I need to do these next couple months to keep a healthy mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional standing here in Germany and just with my family. ⁣ ⁣ So I encourage you this weekend to take advantage of an hour during your peek mind engaging time to answer those questions as we head into a “Corona fall.” Study yourself and plan, or at least look at the next couple months using that knowledge! 💕💕💕

How many parenting tools do you have in your 🧰? After feeling like I’ve hit rock bottom again and again in joyful parenting I’ve finally made myself search for ANY tool that isn’t TV or a babysitter. 🙅🏻‍♀️. I always envisioned having this open, communication friendly, listening without judgement relationship with my kids when they’re “older,”— but forgot that I have to start that direction NOW. I don’t think I truly realized how much I’ve been setting that vision up for failure with my anger, resentment, and hopelessness in those hard parenting moments. It’s not the kids that need the practice, it’s me. Really it’s 85%+ me. Through reading incredibly helpful posts/emails from @themilitarywifeandmom my husband and I have started to rewrite the way we interact with the kids based on how they can currently engage with and perceive the world. I have hope again that I can love them like I knew I was meant to. Who do you read/listen to, both blog, podcast, or book, to find more tools for parenting?

Travel planning is my homesickness therapy. 📍🏰 With my husband going home for an electrician walk through (later fall), the reality that I COULD go home makes it all the more hard to stay put! And yet I wouldn’t go home for anything less than a month because the thought of flying with our kids again STILL gives me PTSD 😳. But if I have European adventures to look forward to, I’m much more compliant 😂 (right honey??😜). When was the last time you were homesick??

I keep pinching myself, but apparently it’s TRUE. We’re breaking ground this week on that plot of paradise. 😱. Just saying that out loud makes my head light and heart pound! We’re so excited to work with Homes by JJ for this long time dream of a home! (Also I miss that #moosegrimstad like aching heart crazy. 🐶💔. I just want to squeeze him and rub my face in that furry scruff and cry my eyes out— 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️😅 #somanyfeels )

Penguins and tutus kind of Thursday! 🤗 Having tried the childcare/preschool (Kita) opportunity and deciding to stay home with the kids instead— I have much more drive to be present and have fun with the kids because it was “my choice.” It’s hard to feel like we get many choices in motherhood sometimes right!? 🤪 I mean- I guess I did make the choice to have said babies 😂🙏🏼💕, but so many days I lose focus of why I want to spend time teaching and exploring with them. Last week’s experience reminded me how I KNOW my own kids, that I can expound upon their quirks/joys, and share experiences with them that they love! Here’s to a renewed spirit and perspective towards parenting this fall! (And our new Zoo and aquarium pass! Hopefully we don’t feel the need to see the ENTIRE ZOO every visit 😅🥱)

Follow up from yesterday: I put on my big girl mom

Follow up from yesterday: I put on my big girl mom pants and had the awkward conversations today. #notmyfavorite ⁣ ⁣ I still left with some indecision because good things can be hard, bad things can seem good, and big picture life will generally move on. #whoyoucallincrazy 😂🤪⁣ ⁣ Then I talked to a group of fantastic local moms and was reassured by the majority that not all German schools are the same so you should feel confident in your choice and your gut feeling as a mama. 💕 There’s something so powerful in moms coming together to remind a mama that “she knows best” for her kids!⁣ ⁣ A reminder to always encourage a mom. Goodness do we need it as we navigate all of this life 💛. ⁣ ⁣ And my kids keep repeating how excited they are to do “preschool at home.” 😚 Now that I’m over this hump, I really am too! Someone get me a planner (in English bitte?) and let’s start planning 😂🗓🤓.

We’ve been trying out the local preschool opportunity we received here recently and I’ve learned that the mama 🐻 in me is much stronger than I originally thought! 😬😅 ⁣#rawr ⁣ It’s hard to go with your gut feel when that feeling might be against the cultural norms. Hence why I’m so thankful for my home team that listens to, prays for, and encourages me as I navigate life thousands of miles away 🌍 😩 I love you guys. ⁣ As I probably make the decision to not do Kita and continue with the kids at home, I’m reminded that it’s OK ⁣ 👍🏼 to be excited to try something new. ⁣ ⁣ 🤔 Have “that something” not be exactly what you hoped. ⁣ ⁣ 😭 Maybe have an emotional breakdown as you deal with it. ⁣ 🤷🏻‍♀️ To try again?⁣ ⁣ ☝🏼 To make the decision that you feel best about, regardless the “assumed pressures around you.”⁣ (Especially about your babies!!) ⁣ So here’s to a few awkward conversations #ihateconfrontation , getting organized for a fruitful fall #iloveschedulers #struggletofollowthrough , loving my kids better #praylaughsing , and feeling my true worth as a mom #ihaveauniquepurpose
